Description: “Another six nurses graduate as sisters” details the graduation of new Sisters: Suzanne Kerr, Rhonda F. Beazley, Joyce M. Austen, Daisy M. Wallace, Helen J. Gow and Maureen J. Roberts under the tuition of Training Sister Matthews. A graduation ceremony was held at the old nurses’ home on Friday December 3rd 1965. The nurses were presented with their badges and certificates by Chairman Mr. R. G Mathews and Matron Inskip in front of around 100 guests. President of Gosford Hospital Auxiliary Mrs. Wicks presented the Sisters with their first veils. House prizes for academic achievement were awarded to Miss Suzanne Kerr, Miss Maureen Roberts, Miss Dianne Phillips, Nurse Jennifer O’Neill, Nurse Helen Westerman, Nurse Ellen Robinson, Nurse Maria Keetman and Nurse Magdeline Ho. During his address Mr Mathews outlined some of the features of the Starr Committee’s report on hospitalisation and Dr. Sach’s report on the care of the aged. Mr Mathews said that there would need to be some changes to the current funding of hospitals. Last financial year £5.5m was diverted from lotteries, £24m State funding and £21m in fees paid by patients. A highlight of the evening was war heroine and guest speaker Miss E. Savage. Miss Savage is Matron of the Rankin Park Chest Hospital at New Lambton, Newcastle. Nurse Partridge was chosen to present Matron Savage with a small gift as a memento of her visit. Entertainment was provided by Mary Ann and Jean Space and Christine Durrell.
